Domes
Talbot Designs shields Statue of Liberty

A Talbot dome houses a microscope enabling the viewer to see the minute sculptures.
Talbot Designs’ domes are often used as display cases but it is slightly rarer that one encloses a 24ct gold, perfectly-detailed sculpture of the Statue of Liberty, hand-carved within the eye of a needle.
This is one of a collection of breathtaking microscopic statues which are the work of internationally-renowned ‘micro-artist’ Willard Wigan who uses the specially-commissioned domes as an integral part of his art.
His entire series of minute sculptures were sold at auction earlier this year to the tennis luminary turned art-collector David Lloyd and are now valued at £11.2 million. As well as the Statue of Liberty, Willard has created a host of miniature works including Homer and Bart Simpson on a pin head and Snow White and the seven dwarves in the eye of a needle.
His work has been described as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ and it is a fitting tribute to Talbot Designs’ talent in the field of plastics moulding that such a prominent and well-respected artist chooses their services to enhance his work.
The domes are used as housings for the microscopes necessary to see the sculptures that are virtually invisible to the naked eye. These unique vitrines are crafted by Wigan’s long-standing design partner, Jerry Elford who uses specially designed optics in order to allow the viewer the to see the work. He describes Talbot’s domes as making a “necessary and valuable contribution to the work”.
Talbot Designs’ Managing Director, Richard Woolff, said: “The versatility of our domes is immense. Talbot Designs’ domes have been used for hundreds of different applications. Our bespoke plastic mouldings are often commissioned by designers and artists, museums and galleries, including the Royal Academy, but in addition our products are used, for example, as window displays in a major Knightsbridge store and for light-fittings at Charing Cross Station. We work fast and accurately and can usually deliver within the UK within 24 hours”.
