Buying a stairway to Talbot Design
Longchamp is a luxury-goods brand best known for its
bags but in its New York store the beauty of the leather goods is equalled
by the interior design. The eyes are drawn to a uniquely surreal staircase
that seems to emerge almost organically from the floorboards. The lacquered
floor warps in an Escher-like contortion, seamlessly morphing into steps
and wall.
The designer, Thomas Heatherwick, called upon Talbot Designs in order to create a balustrade that would enhance, not destroy, the visual effect. This meant that it had to be transparent and simultaneously sustain the free-flowing form of the staircase.
Talbot Designs’ expertise in plastic moulding was essential for such an esoteric project and it is one of the few companies in the field with the knowledge and the deftness of touch for such an assignment.
The fact that cutting edge designers repeatedly return to Talbot Designs for the most innovative of their creations is a testament to the versatility and variability that this small, north-London ‘designer’s best kept secret’ offers its customers in all areas of plastic moulding. Its bespoke plastic mouldings are often commissioned by designers and artists, museums and galleries, as well as up-market retailers and hotels.
