The Properties of Acrylic

Acrylic is such a versatile and valued material, it is used in so many products today. The uses of acrylic are vast and it is used in so many different industries. Acrylic is often preferred compared to glass. Acrylic is more expensive than glass however it does definitely have much more benefits and can be easier to work with. Acrylic is often used in many different types of industries such as, entertainment, business, medicine, dentistry, leisure and more. Acrylic domes and acrylic design are often used for entertainment and business purposes. These domes are used primarily for display, they are used to show things, pictures and colours are often displayed to catch the viewers attention. Logos and text can also be displayed on the domes, this makes a presentation or show much more exciting and enjoyable for viewers.

There are many advantages of using acrylic instead of glass. Acrylic is many times stronger than glass, however half as heavy. Acrylic is a better insulator than glass so will keep anything you like heated for longer than glass. Acrylic is completely transparent however thick it is which makes it brilliant for aquarium displays. Glass on the other hand has a tint of green the thicker it gets. Acrylic is easily shaped as it can be melted then reshaped and welded back together then polished and the seams are invisible. This is something glass cannot do.People are often scared that acrylic scratches easily unlike glass however with acrylic the scratches can be easily buffed and polished out. When acrylic is over an inch thick it is bullet proof, this is very useful and is used for this purpose to protect many people in risky jobs.

‘sestosenso’ is a luminary apparition, a result of british designer paul cocksedge‘s collaboration with german car company BMW and italian lighting company flos.

Created in acrylic and wrapped around tooling created in-house, the apparition can only be seen when you are enveloped in the acrylic shade. Talbot Designs, acrylic and plastic fabricators, often work with designers to realise their designs. We work closely from start to finish and help solve the problems associated with pushing the boundaries of acrylic design.

Acrylic and designers have a symbiotic relationship as the beauty and workability of acrylic makes it easier to use than glass and can achieve some dramatic shapes as seen above an below.
